Ana Hartig

Ana Hartig, emeritus lecturer in the Department of World Languages and Cultures, passed away last month at the age of 88. Born July 31st, 1937, Professor Hartig taught Spanish language and literature at Cal Poly from 1979-1984 then again from 1991 until 2020. Ana, native of Barcelona Spain, completed her undergraduate degree in Philosophy and Literature from the University of Barcelona,1964, her Master’s degree in Spanish Language and Literature from UCSB,1969. She later advanced to candidacy for her Ph.D. from UCSB 1984 before moving to San Luis Obispo.
Ana was witty, vivacious, and learned. She had a strong sense of humor. She thoroughly enjoyed teaching college students, never holding back and always sharing her vivacious personality and the cultural norms of Spain. She grew up during the Franco regime, a strong dictator ruler of Spain. Her life was full of honest conversations, rich stories, moments of conflict, but always finding humor and connecting with those who would engage with her.
Ana will be very much missed by her friends and colleagues at Cal Poly. She is survived by her two children, their families, three grandchildren, as well as her family in Spain.
